The Pirena race

Dog sledding in the land of the sunny siesta.

The Pirena is a stage race. Every day there is a start and a finish to one leg of the race. The times are recorded, tallied and an overall winner is declared at the end of two weeks of racing. After each stage, the athletes are feed, watered and cared for. After any necessary veterinary care, the athletes are allowed to rest in their kennels until the next day's stage. There were 15 stages run of between 11 and 48 kilometres each, with the majority of them during the day. Three stages were run at night. The Spanish region of Catalonia hosted most of the stages, although part of the race trekked through Aragon, France and Andorra. The Pirena race hosts teams from across Europe. Spanish, Austrian, Dutch, German and Czech teams were all in the 2006 Pirena. This race is a highlight on the European racing calendar. Started in 1990 by race director Pep Pares, the Pirena has developed into a well-organized, multi-faceted enterprise. The Pirena employs a small army of blue Gortex-clad workers. The organization includes: veterinary-care and medical-care programs; public relations and television production capabilities; a crew of trailbreakers and a battalion of people who function like circus roustabouts.
