At the general assembly of the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) held in Paris, the president of the BIE Executive Committee, Carmen Sylvain, today read out the reports on the two projects in progress for the coming Zaragoza and Shanghai expositions. As was pointed out at yesterday's committee meeting prior to today's assembly, the Spanish project both meets all the requirements as a project and is on schedule in terms of the deadlines set at the BIE assembly last December.
The fact that Zaragoza 2008 has a corporation with full powers, has carried out environmental studies without these even being strictly necessary, has passed a special law for speeding up administrative procedures, has an office that is already in operation, has new board members, and is the owner of the expo land, etc. all went towards ensuring full marks for Zaragoza's project after the member delegates of the BIE had heard the report.
Like the Chinese representatives, the president of the state corporation, Roque Gistau, and the director general of operations, Jerónimo Blasco, spoke for a period of 15 minutes, using audiovisual media to help convey the current state of the Spanish project.
The organizers of the Aichi Universal Exposition likewise had the opportunity to address the general assembly to give an account of the positive course followed by their exposition. All the indicators are that not only are they exceeding the expected figures for the number of visitors to the Aichi Expo so far (some nine million), but that by September this figure could rise to around fifteen million, clearly exceeding the predictions made at the outset.
At the general assembly held today in Paris, Turkey officially presented its bid for the city of Istanbul to host the Universal Exposition of 2015. According to comments made by BIE delegates, the signs are that Morocco, Iran, Poland and Korea might also prepare bids for the coming international exhibitions.
Today in Paris Zaragoza Expo 2008 presented various documents to the BIE: the state report on the current situation (which was yesterday assessed in the most positive of terms by the Executive Committee), the planning report, and the administrative plan with the modifications that are being incorporated into it.
