New York Gets Taste of Modern Flamenco

NEW YORK - Spanish choreographer Maria Pages traveled to New York for her Joyce Theater debut but quickly transported her audience to the intimate land of flamenco.
Her long arms were barely visible Tuesday night as they snaked behind and above her head, catching the warm light of a single, dim lantern.

The Jota came to be in the 1700s and is the National folk dance of Aragón, Spain.
The "Jota of Aragón" is the oldest of the styles and corresponds with the ancient carols, which in Chaucer's time meant a dance as well as a song. Funerals and wakes also afford opportunities for the dance, the Jota, for instance, is often performed in watching the dead.

To try to explain Flamenco in a few paragraphs, is complicated on the one hand, because of the amount of elements that form the history and characteristics of this art, and awkward on the other hand, because of the radical discrepancies that exist in the attribution of its paternity to different ethnic groups and cultures.
